Photography Student Sharpens Focus on People Experiencing Homelessness

Leah den Bok had a marked advantage heading into an assignment for a second-year photography class at Sheridan. “50 strangers” challenges students to capture 50 photos of people unknown to them. It’s an exercise in portraiture, working in unmediated conditions and interacting with unfamiliar subjects. Now, during the COVID-19 pandemic, den Bok has continued her black-and-white portrait series to spotlight the disproportionate challenges faced by people experiencing homelessness.

Celebrating Student Achievement Virtually at Sheridan

Every year, Sheridan hosts Animation Industry Day and 20 other grad shows, and academic awards celebrations like it. They’re a long-standing tradition that brings students together with industry supporters, donors, and faculty members to celebrate accomplishments over the past year. In many programs in the Faculty of Animation, Arts, and Design, graduating students put their best work forward to be critiqued by professionals in the field, and awards are presented at the shows.

So what happens when a pandemic hits? Somehow, the shows must go on. Our faculty teams behind them were committed to nothing less.

Graduating Sheridan Music Theatre students help industry cope with COVID-19 crisis

Michael Rubinoff, the Producing Artistic Director of Sheridan’s Canadian Music Theatre Project (CMTP), and Nick Green, a Toronto playwright who co-wrote the musical the CMTP was developing in the winter semester involved Music Theatre Performance students in a pair of heartwarming initiatives supporting an industry crippled in the wake of COVID-19 closures and cancellations.

Rubinoff and nine students organized Places, Please, a 24-hour virtual telethon that raised more than $41,000 for the Actors Fund of Canada (AFC), while many of Rubinoff’s students also assisted Green with the Social Distancing Festival, a website that showcased work from shows that have been canceled due to the global pandemic.
