Business Administration - Marketing
Graduation Year: 1985
I became interested in the research side of marketing in my third year at Sheridan while completing projects for the Marketing Research course. I was intrigued by both the variety of projects that the research field offers and the role research plays in the strategic planning process.
After graduation, I landed a contract research position and started a research business with a fellow graduate, Jill Bond (nee Davis). I was then hired by MacLaren Advertising (now M2 Universal) as a Research Analyst supporting one of Canada’s largest media departments. Along with providing media buying and planning research support, I also provided research consulting services for many media companies, including television networks, magazines, radio stations and newspapers. I couldn’t have landed in a better place—the exposure to all forms of media research through the advertising agency supplied me with a very diverse, and valuable, knowledge base.
After seven years at MacLaren, which included one year of media planning, I moved on and held senior research and marketing positions at an outdoor advertising company and a national magazine.
I am currently in my eighth year at the Toronto Star providing research support for not only the main print product, but also many of the other Star Media Group properties, including the online products thestar.com and StarPM.
I have very fond memories of Sheridan—good times and a solid education, which became even more evident very early in my career. My education allowed me to contribute to the day-to-day operation in my workplace right from the start. My Sheridan experience would not have been complete without the lunches at Monaghan’s, the pub nights at the Galaxy, and of course, playing intramural hockey for Coach Tinker’s Demon Express.
