Human Resource Management
Graduation Year: 2009
“When people ask me if there is ever a dull moment in my day, I answer with an emphatic NO!” says Janet Rodas. As a Human Resources (HR) Business Partner for Rogers Communications, she works in a fast-paced, innovative environment that challenges her to learn something new on a daily basis. “Our HR culture promotes not only continuous learning, but exposure to different client groups and career development,” says Janet, who is proud to be part of an organization that has been named one of Greater Toronto’s Top 90 Employers and Canada’s Top Employers for Young People.
After graduating from the University of Toronto with an Honours Bachelor of Science degree in 2005, Janet began her career in the pharmaceutical industry with GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). She then moved from GSK to Kelly Scientific Resources, where she specialized in the recruitment of scientific professionals in the pharmaceutical, clinical trial and biotechnology industries.
It was always her plan to gain a theoretical foundation in the sciences and apply that to the technical aspects of HR. Janet’s undergraduate degree is in the area of Health and Life Sciences, which many grads find to be a great complement to the HR field. “I am now realizing the benefits in my career, as work in organizational development requires an understanding of what motivates employees and how they adapt to change,” Janet says.
After graduating from Sheridan, Janet was offered a position at Rogers as a Human Resources Coordinator, supporting the Information Technology Services (ITS) client group. The scope of her role has grown considerably since then.
At Sheridan, Janet gained first-hand knowledge and best practices from business leaders working in the industry. “Professor John Hardisty continually raised the bar for students, empowering them to think strategically and providing the necessary tools to apply concepts to the everyday work environment. I still use one of the reference books from his curriculum in my job today,” asserts Janet.
A member of the Human Resources Professionals Association (HRPA) Peel Chapter Board of Directors since 2009, Janet is in her second term as Student Liaison Director. She looks forward to further establishing strong relationships among the HRPA Peel Chapter Executive Board, academic institutions and students within the Peel Region.
“My advice to current human resources students: network! Volunteer with the local HRPA Chapter, as well as organizations that you would like to work with in the future. Also, remember to continuously learn and keep abreast of changes in the HR profession.”
