PEER TUTORING

What is the difference between Peer Tutoring and Staff Tutoring? The Career Centre's staff tutors are students on paid co-op work terms from the University of Waterloo or the University of Guelph, providing assistance with topics related to English and Math as well as general assistance with study skills and student effectiveness strategies. Peer tutors are Sheridan students, usually in their 2nd and 3rd year or with additional experience, selected for their good marks and paid to provide assistance to other students in specific Sheridan subjects.

What subjects can I get tutoring in? Peer tutoring is applicable to all subjects other than English and Math (see Staff Tutoring). However, it is subject to tutor availability. It is uncommon to have peer tutors in final year subjects since there are no senior students who have already completed it. Also keep in mind that tutors may not be available toward the end of the semester since they must put first priority on their own studies.

Is there a cost? Tutors are paid but there is no cost to you for the actual tutoring hours. You must pay a $20 administration fee, per subject, for each tutor you are matched with.

How do I sign-up? Read further details then apply online from our Peer Tutoring page.

How much tutoring can I get? Eligible students have access up to 10 hours, per subject, per semester, of paid tutoring and up to 15 hours per subject, per semester if you are a student registered with Accessible Learning Services. If you require additional time you will need to pay your tutor directly at a rate you both agree on. Private arrangements are made solely at students' own discretion.

Can I carry forward hours I don't use? Unused hours cannot be carried forward from one semester to the next, or from one tutoring subject to another.

Can I get a refund for unused hours? The fee you pay is to be matched with a tutor, not for their hourly pay. Once you have been matched with a tutor and arranged to meet for your first session, there are no refunds.
