As the scope of practice for both pharmacists and registered pharmacy technicians expand into higher levels of expertise, the role of the pharmacy assistant is becoming critical to the operational effectiveness of the retail pharmacy. The Sheridan Retail Pharmacy Assistant Program will give you the resources you need to take advantage of these job opportunities in retail pharmacies.
The Retail Pharmacy Assistant Program is designed to give you the basic knowledge and skills you will need to work as pharmacy assistant in a retail dispensary. The main role of pharmacy assistant is to provide clerical and technical support to pharmacists and registered pharmacy technicians in a retail pharmacy environment.
Through the Retail Pharmacy Assistant Program, you’ll be well prepared to:
- Comply with all legislations and policies relating to pharmacy practices
- Assist pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in the day to day tasks in retail pharmacy such as processing, preparing, packaging, and labelling of prescriptions and pharmaceutical products, within established policies and procedures
- Solve problems relating to prescriptions such as adjudication problems, calculations and legality issues
- Communicate with patients, customers and other health care professionals to provide excellent patient care and customer service
- Identify common prescription, non-prescription and medical devices that support healthy living

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Program Eligibility
Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent, including these required courses:
- One English, Grade 12 (ENG4C or ENG4U)
or
Mature student status. (See "Admissions" section for details.)
Applicant Selection
Eligible applicants will be selected on the basis of their previous academic achievement (the average of their six highest senior-level credits, including required courses).
Applicants who do not meet the admission requirements for this program will be assessed and advised individually and may be considered for other, related programs.
Criminal Record Check and Immunization Requirements
Sheridan field placement agencies may require a police record check for criminal offenses, a vulnerable sector check and/or a current acceptable record of immunization. Students will be required to provide this documentation directly to their field placement prior to the start of the placement and at their own expense.
