Week of the Child, October 18 - 24, 2010

The Association of Early Childhood Educators, Ontario(AECEO) initiated the Week of the Child in 1980 following the International Year of the Child. It was conceived as a time for communities to celebrate and focus on the young children of Ontario and to educate the public about the values of quality Early Childhood Education.

The Week of the Child is a time within our communities across Ontario to:

* reflect on the rights and the needs of our children
* renew our commitment to improve the quality of opportunities for all children and their families
* review how well we care for and educate the future adults, parents and leaders of Ontario

At Sheridan, our Early Childhood Centres are celebrating Week of the Child in the following ways…

The Montessori Preschool Centre on the Trafalgar campus will be collecting food and toiletries for Oakville’s Fareshare Foodbank during the week of October 18th. The children and teachers will also be making a special classroom book in honour of the Week of the Child. Every child will have an opportunity to take the book home and read it with their family.

The Trafalgar Child Care Centre will be holding a food, hat & mitten drive.  They will collect non-perishable food items, as well as new hats and mittens to donate to a local shelter, Halton Women’s Place.  It is an organization that provides shelter and crisis services for abused women and their dependent children.

The Mississauga Civic Centre Child Care Centre will hold these special events during the week:
“Our Toddlers at Work” – an interactive photographic display on magnets,
“Preschool Art Show” – parents are invited to join the children for a special afternoon snack on Friday, and admire the art work,
”Kindergarten Dance Party” – Friday at 4pm, the tickets, room decor and refreshments will be made by the children, and

”Fun for All” – “Guess the Baby”, staff baby pictures will be posted on the Parent Board.

If you wish to join us in celebrating Week of the Child, items can be dropped off at the Manager’s office (Andrea Davis), BB22 (basement, under the cafeteria) at the Trafalgar campus.
