Two Mississauga residents are the recipients of $2,000 scholarships from Sheridan Institute of Technology & Advanced Learning. The scholarships were presented at the inaugural Mississauga Technology Awards held last week at the Living Arts Centre in Mississauga.

"Sheridan is proud to be a founding sponsor of these awards," says Dr. Robert Turner, Sheridan's President and CEO. "This initiative helps to highlight the demand for skilled technology employees in Canada. In the IT sector alone, more than 90,000 jobs will need to be filled over the next three to five years."

Girish Bothe was presented with the 2008 Sheridan Internationally Trained Entrance Scholarship. Girish is a Mechanical Engineer who also holds an MBA in Operations and Marketing from his home country of India.
He has applied for Canadian credentials for his Professional Engineer designation, and is also in the process of applying for membership in the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineers.

Girish came to Canada to work in his field, which is cost estimation and press tool design, but has had little success in getting a full-time job. He was told about Sheridan's Fast Track to Technology Occupation Bridging Program, which is sponsored in part by the Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration, and decided to apply. "Sheridan is delighted to present him with this scholarship and looks forward to welcoming him in September," said Dr.Turner in making the presentation.

The winner of the 2008 Sheridan Secondary School Entrance Scholarship is Zayna Shahzad, a graduate of Streetsville Secondary School. Throughout high school Zayna always achieved a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Zayna has had a passionate interest in computers since the age of 12, launching her own web design business at an early age.

She declined offers from five universities, choosing instead to enroll in Sheridan's Computer Systems Technology program. "Zayna is an outstanding example of the calibre of students we attract, and we look forward to welcoming her in September," said Dr. Turner.

Founded in 1967, the Sheridan Institute of Technology & Advanced Learning today serves 15,000 full-time students at its campuses in Oakville and Brampton, Ontario. Sheridan offers an innovative learning environment celebrated for academic excellence, applied research and creativity. Program options range from one-year certificates to four-year Bachelor's degrees, in the arts, business, community and liberal studies, and applied computing and engineering sciences.
