Planning for Success

Information Technologies Support Services, Office Administration – Legal
Graduation Year: 2007
I have learned in life that it’s good to have a plan. My professional journey has always been about planning and working towards the bigger picture. Sometimes that picture turns out differently from what you expected. After graduating from Sheridan in 2004, I worked as a legal secretary for about two and a half years. During this time, I gained professional and personal experiences that helped me build the confidence to find out what I was really good at. Along the way, I researched programs aimed at furthering my career in the legal field but was continually drawn to the technical aspect of my job. I am a fast learner and have always been very curious about how technology works. I knew I needed more formal education to make the jump from legal administration to the technology world. The Information Technology Support Services (ITSS) program offered two co-op placements, allowing me to gain the valuable work experience I needed to enter this new field. The program was challenging and rewarding at the same time; worth all the struggles I endured to finish in 2007. After graduation, I held several IT jobs until I found full time employment as a Help Desk Specialist in a law firm.
I am now in a position to give back to Sheridan. Through my role as Chair of Sheridan’s ITSS Program Advisory Committee, I am able to ensure program courses remain relevant to the industry. As a member of Sheridan’s female IT support group, KNOWIT, I encourage women to believe in their ability to forge successful careers in technology.
In the years to come, I look forward to working as a corporate trainer or in an educational environment designing and teaching courses, once I have completed my Adult Education Certificate through Sheridan’s Continuing Education Department.
