Today’s print journalists have to be versatile, flexible and adaptable—and no print journalism college instills those qualities quite like Sheridan. Our print journalism students produce two community newspapers (the Sheridan Sun and the Sheridan Sun Online) and learn cutting-edge technologies, presentation formats and professional skills. In a rapidly changing industry, Sheridan’s Journalism - Print diploma program keeps you ahead of the curve.
The Newsroom as Classroom
In addition to taking print journalism courses, you’ll begin working on the Sheridan Sun during your first year, getting hands-on training and experience in:
- Reporting
- Writing
- Editing
- Layout
- Photography
You’ll work in a newsroom environment with the pace, pressure and camaraderie that real-world print journalists experience. You’ll dig for stories and be rewarded for taking initiative, while mastering industry-standard software and hardware. In second year, working on the Sheridan Sun Online, you’ll post video and master interactive features. You'll also write and design e-zines in both first and second years. At the end of your second year in the print journalism program, you’ll complete a four-week work placement with a newspaper, magazine, PR office or online publication.
A print journalism diploma from Sheridan can enable you to compete successfully in the job market – and to step directly into a career as a print journalist.
Mobile Computing
Information and print journalism technologies have grown increasingly mobile, and Sheridan’s print journalism courses have kept pace. You’ll conduct classroom sessions and production assignments using laptop computers, with 24/7 access – on campus and off – to all coursework. See Mobile Computing for more information.
Successful print journalism students already have very good writing skills when they enter the program; you will not receive basic writing instruction in this program. In addition to having a good command of English, applicants should possess news awareness, a sense of curiosity and a strong commitment to quality and ethical reporting of news and public affairs.
Journalism – Print Program classes are held at Sheridan’s Trafalgar Road Campus, Oakville, Ontario.
Converging technologies such as desktop publishing, digital photography and the Internet have merged many facets of print journalism. Journalism graduates may now pursue a variety of careers and freelance opportunities in newspapers, online publications, newsletters, public relations and magazines.
